The Tug - Zorra's Men of Might!
We are thrilled to have as our guest speaker William Butt playwright and local historian to talk about his recent historical play Mighty Men of Zorra. The story is about 13 years of strenuous competition by the braw sons of Zorra emerging as the champions of the tug-of-war competition on July 4th, 1893 at the Chicago Worlds Fair. During the 1880's and 1890's almost every Township in Oxford County had its own tug-of-war team. It was not so much a sport but an exhibition of sheer power. James Sutherland, himself a Zorra man took the team under his wing. Sutherland had wide connections being both MP of Oxford North and the Royal Chief of the Scottish Clans of North America. In 1976 the tug-of-war trophies were returned to Oxford County after many years of exile - itself another story!!
